Big waves pounding Newport and the Wedge

Spurred by reports of big swells, I finally checked out the Wedge in Newport Beach yesterday. By the time I made it through the traffic crawling into the peninsula the biggest waves had gone, and surf boards had given way to body surfing. Whenever these intrepid souls caught a wave, the crowd roared with delight.

Hello, Velellas! Jelly-like creatures are popping up everywhere

Spotted quite a few of these gorgeous jelly-like creatures during my walk along El Porto beach this afternoon. The Velella velellas are also known as “by the wind sailors” for their silvery fin, seen below. They were all over Huntington Beach the other day, and have washed ashore up and down the California coast.
